IKEA Cable Management Guide: SKADIS, FIXA, and DIY Tricks

IKEA FIXA Cable Clips

The IKEA FIXA cable management set includes adhesive clips in multiple sizes. They mount to the underside of a desk surface and guide individual cables along a defined path. At a few dollars for a multi-pack, they are the cheapest starting point for any IKEA setup.

The clips work well on the smooth underside of IKEA desktops. Apply them to guide cables from the back of the desk toward a central tray location. Press firmly for 30 seconds on application and wait an hour before loading them with cable weight.

The limitation: FIXA clips only hold one or two cables each. They are not a substitute for a cable tray. Use them to route individual cables, then gather bundles into a tray or sleeve.

IKEA SIGNUM Cable Tray

The IKEA SIGNUM is a horizontal cable tray that mounts under desk surfaces using screws. It is one of the best-value cable trays available anywhere, typically priced around $15.

The SIGNUM holds a power strip plus several bundled cable runs. Its open-wire construction allows heat dissipation. It mounts with four screws and takes about 10 minutes to install.

One note for IKEA LINNMON desktops: the LINNMON is hollow particleboard. The SIGNUM’s screws need to land in the solid edge banding, not the hollow center section. Mount it within 2 inches of the desk’s back edge where the frame material is denser.

IKEA SKADIS Pegboard

The IKEA SKADIS pegboard is a wall-mounted panel with a snap-in accessory ecosystem. For cable management, it is most useful for mounting a power strip on the wall directly behind a desk. This gets the power strip off the floor and out of the cable tray entirely.

The SKADIS accessory system includes a dedicated power strip holder. A surge protector mounted on the SKADIS at desk height means nearly all power cables make a short vertical drop from the strip to the desk surface. Cable length management becomes much simpler.

SKADIS panels are available in 36x22 inches and 36x58 inches. The larger size is better if you want to use it for both cable management and general desk organization.

Desk-Specific Tips

LINNMON

The LINNMON is IKEA’s most popular tabletop. It is lightweight hollow particleboard with a cardboard honeycomb core. Screws placed in the hollow center pull out easily under load.

For LINNMON cable management:

• Mount the SIGNUM or any screw-mount tray within 2 inches of the rear edge where material is denser.
• Use clamp-mount trays as an alternative. They grip the desk edge without relying on the hollow interior.
• Adhesive cable clips work well on the smooth underside surface.
• Avoid any mount that places significant downward load on the center of the desktop.

ALEX Desk

The ALEX desk has solid gable side panels and a more substantial back panel than the LINNMON. Screw mounts work reliably on the ALEX.

The ALEX’s drawers sit on the right side (or left), which leaves the center and opposing side for cable routing. A practical approach: mount a SIGNUM tray under the center of the desk, route cables from both monitors and the computer toward the tray, and use the FIXA clips to guide cables along the underside before they reach the tray.

Many ALEX users drill a 60-80mm cable pass-through hole in the back panel using a hole saw. This allows cables to pass from the desk surface to the back without running over the edge. A plastic grommet finishes the hole cleanly.

KARLBY Countertop

The KARLBY is a solid wood countertop (oak veneer over particleboard) commonly used with ALEX drawers as legs. It accepts screws well anywhere across its surface.

For KARLBY setups, a screw-mounted SIGNUM or VIVO tray mounts securely anywhere along the back half of the surface. The extra depth of the KARLBY (24 inches) also gives more room to work with cable routing.

Third-Party Products That Work Well With IKEA Setups

VIVO Under-Desk Cable Tray: More capacity than the SIGNUM for larger setups. Fits most surge protectors with room for cable bundles. Under $20.

Velcro One-Wrap ties: Use these everywhere on IKEA setups. Buy a multi-pack. They work with every desk model.

J-channel cable raceways: Mount to the back of ALEX gable panels or along baseboards behind any IKEA desk. Useful for routing cables from desk to floor outlet along a wall.

3M Command cord clips: More reliable adhesive than FIXA for heavier cable runs. Use on LINNMON where screw options are limited.

A Practical IKEA Cable Management System

Here is a complete approach that works for most IKEA desk setups:

1. Mount a SIGNUM tray under the back portion of the desk.
2. Place your surge protector in the tray.
3. Use FIXA clips to route individual cables from each device toward the tray.
4. Bundle cables with velcro ties before they enter the tray.
5. If you have a SKADIS on the wall, mount the power strip there instead and run a single power cable from the SKADIS to the floor outlet.

This system costs under $40 using only IKEA products and handles most standard desk setups cleanly.
