Budget Home Office Setup Under $600: Full-Time Remote Work
A complete home office setup for full-time remote work under $600. Covers desk, monitor, keyboard, and webcam for video calls without cutting corners on what matters.
This setup is built for full-time remote work on a strict budget. The total is $564. Every dollar is justified. I made deliberate trade-offs to keep cost down while protecting the components that directly affect professional performance on video calls. Here’s how I prioritized.

The Prioritization Logic
Budget home office setups fail in two ways. First: cutting the wrong corners. A $20 keyboard is fine. A $20 webcam is not. Second: no clear upgrade path. I chose components that solve the immediate problem now and have obvious replacements later.
Video call quality matters for remote work in a way it doesn’t for in-office work. Colleagues and managers form impressions based on how you look and sound. The webcam and headset received the highest budget allocation after the monitor.
The Desk: IKEA LINNMON / ADILS at $79
The IKEA LINNMON / ADILS Desk costs $79. It’s a flat laminate top on four adjustable legs. It’s not a good desk. It wiggles slightly and the laminate is thin. But at $79, it solves the basic problem: a flat surface at the right height. The IKEA SIGNUM Cable Rail at $19 mounts underneath and keeps the monitor and laptop cables from pooling on the floor. That’s the only infrastructure investment needed at this price point.
The Monitor: Dell S2421HN 24-inch at $149
The Dell S2421HN 24-inch Monitor is the best 24-inch productivity display under $150. The 1080p IPS panel with HDMI and audio output covers every laptop connection. Color accuracy is adequate for work tasks. The thin bezels look clean. A second monitor would double productivity later. For now, one monitor is correct. Starting with a good 24-inch panel is better than a poor 27-inch panel at the same price.
Webcam and Audio: The Priority Budget Spend
The Logitech C920s Webcam at $79 is the correct camera for remote work. 1080p at 30fps with a glass lens. The difference between this and a built-in laptop camera is immediately visible on calls. Colleagues notice. The C920s clips to any monitor. Setup takes three minutes.
The Headset for Video Calls at $79 covers both audio input and output. A headset keeps your voice clear to call participants and blocks external noise from reaching your ears. The alternative is laptop speakers and microphone, which echo audio back to other participants. A headset eliminates that problem entirely. This is the second highest priority after the webcam.
Keyboard and Mouse: K380 ($39) and M720 ($69)
The Logitech K380 Keyboard at $39 connects over Bluetooth to three devices. For someone who switches between a work laptop and personal device, the three-device switching is genuinely useful. The keys are small but accurate. At $39, it’s the right keyboard for this budget.
The Logitech M720 Triathlon Mouse at $69 is the standout value in this setup. It connects to three devices via Bluetooth or the Bolt receiver. The ergonomic shape handles full work days comfortably. It’s overqualified for a $564 setup and worth every dollar.
Lighting and Desk Lamp at $25
The Desk Lamp at $25 provides adjustable brightness and color temperature. Video calls without supplemental lighting look poor even with a good webcam. The lamp positioned to the side and slightly above eye level creates flattering fill light. Don’t position it behind the monitor. That creates a harsh background contrast.
What to Upgrade First
After building this setup, the upgrade order is: first, the monitor arm (frees desk surface, costs $50 to $150). Second, the keyboard, to a Keychron or comparable mechanical at $100. Third, the desk, to a proper deep surface with cable management. The webcam and headset stay. They already perform at a level above their price bracket.
